Machine Translation and Legal Genres: An Explorative Study

The focus of this dissertation is an explorative study of some legal text genres in combination with machine translation. After an excursus on machine translation and legal translation, the issue is about the quality of raw outputs of legal genres such as the appointment of attorney, share purchase agreement and memorandum opinion - i.e., different genres of a given sub-field, the legal one - in the English-Italian language combination. These texts are subjected to the machine translation system DeepL Translator and subsequently corrected according to Mossop error parameters. A qualitative and quantitative analysis clarifies how and how much the legal genre affects the quality of the raw outputs. It is mainly due to the formality and technicality that legal texts consist of, but this may not be true for other textual types, of which further research is recommended.

Il fulcro di questa tesi è uno studio esplorativo di alcuni generi testuali legali in combinazione con la traduzione automatica. Dopo una lunga introduzione sulla traduzione automatica e sulla traduzione giuridica, viene messa in discussione la qualità dei raw output di generi legali come la procura, la compravendita di azioni e il la sentenza, quindi generi diversi di un determinato sub-field, nella combinazione linguistica inglese-italiano. Questi testi vengono sottoposti alla traduzione automatica del sistema di traduzione automatica DeepL Translator e successivamente a revisione in base ai parametri di errore di Mossop. Attraverso un'analisi qualitativa e quantitativa viene messo in luce come e quanto la qualità del raw output sia influenzata dal genere legale. Ciò è dovuto soprattutto alla formalità e al tecnicismo di cui i testi legali sono costituiti, ma ciò potrebbe non valere per altre tipologie testuali, di cui si raccomandano ulteriori ricerche.
