The use of artificial intelligence solutions applied to the field of satellite imagery encountered an increasing number of applications in recent years, from surveillance to prediction of damages caused by natural disasters. Many of these applications are based on some very well known problems of computer vision, that have been studied over the past 50 years. This work focuses on the task of object detection, which has been tackled in the past using feature based models and then, with the advent of deep learning, these approaches were abandoned in favour of neural networks. This thesis aims to discover the impact of some augmentations used during the training phase of models coming from a well-known framework for object detection, when dealing with satellite images. In particular, for each model we make a comparison between a baseline trained with a default preprocessing, and the same configuration with some custom augmentations tested one at a time. Then, with the results of all the experiments, we provide a discussion from the quantitative point of view, highlighting the benefits and the critical issues of each augmentation we tested, across the models we analyzed.

Abstract

Impact of data augmentations on satellite images for object detection
