Burnout syndrome consists in an emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and a decrease of professional skills that can happen to healthcare professionals and arise in many symptoms including apathy, excessive fatigue, resentment. Therefore, the phenomenon becomes known both to prevent it and to guarantee the fundamental health of the worker. The aim of this work is to investigate the prevalence of Burnout syndrome among dental hygienists registered with the Italian Dental Hygienists Association and the possible corrective actions to be able to manage and prevent this situation. The study was conducted on a sample of 168 dental hygienists who are members of the Italian Dental Hygienists Association (AIDI) to whom the Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire was submitted in order to assess the severity of the Burnout syndrome. Analyzing the answers we obtained, it appears that 16.07% of the sample examined is at high risk of developing an emotional exhaustion while 27.97% is more likely to develop the phenomenon of depersonalization. Finally, the analysis of the last subscale examined by the Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire shows the degree of professional satisfaction which highlights a state of frustration for 38.69% of the interviewees. From the comparison of the data obtained with the articles in the literature, an important lack of this problem in the area of training is highlighted, especially as regards the university context. The proposals, which aim to improve stress management skills in such a way that this difficulty does not lead to burnout syndrome, concern the theme of training both health professionals and students and the inclusion of a specific course with a psychologist of the work in the corporate training plan of health care companies.
