LGBTQ+ linguistic (in)visibility and the challenge of gender neutrality: an Italian translation of the GLAAD Media Reference Guide

LGBTQ+ people have always fought and keep fighting for their visibility. Over the last few years in Italy, increasing awareness of the concepts of gender and identity has developed, leading Italian speakers to search for linguistic solutions that could overcome gender binarism. This dissertation aims at providing an overview of the actual linguistic scenario in Italy, by investigating the nature and the utilization of the linguistic innovations for a gender-fair language and proposing an Italian translation of the GLAAD Media Reference Guide to fairly report on LGBTQ+ people. In addition, the work will focus on the role of translators and translation in such an evolving context.

Le persone LGBTQ+ hanno sempre lottato e continuano a lottare per la loro visibilità. Negli ultimi anni, in Italia, si è sviluppata una maggiore consapevolezza intorno ai concetti di genere e identità, spingendo i/le parlanti italiani/e alla ricerca di nuove soluzioni linguistiche che possano superare il binarismo di genere. Questo lavoro di tesi vuole fornire una panoramica dell'attuale scenario linguistico in Italia, studiando la natura e l'utilizzo delle innovazioni linguistiche per una lingua equa dal punto di vista del genere e proponendo una traduzione italiana della guida GLAAD Media Reference Guide per la corretta trattazione dei temi LGBTQ+. Inoltre, il lavoro si focalizzerà sul ruolo dei/delle traduttori/traduttrici e della traduzione in un contesto così in evoluzione.
