Leadership in sports acts by impacting the psychological components of team sports athletes and their performance. The research analyzes the leadership construct with respect to sports performance and the psychological variables of anxiety, motivational orientation and motivational climate in 4 basketball teams of Serie D and Promozione. Thirty-eight adult males practicing basketball in four teams of Serie D and Promozione in the Veneto region (Average age = 25.89, SD = 6.51) and four coaches of the related teams participated in the study. Athletes completed informed consent and the Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS), Competitive State Anxiety Inventory – 2 (CSAI2), Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire (PMCSQ12) and Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ) questionnaires. The LSS questionnaire was also administered to coaches regarding their perception of their leadership. One match per team was subsequently observed and performance indicators were detected. Good match was found in leadership expectations and leadership perceived by athletes. No differences were found between the self-reported leadership of the coach and perceived by the athletes. In reference to the relationship between the leadership perceived by the players and the psychological variables and performance, autocratic leadership was found to be strongly related to cognitive anxiety, instructions to a motivational climate and personal motivation task oriented. Positive feedback is negatively correlated with the number of missed shots. Positive feedback and Democratic leadership are negatively correlated with the number of offensive rebounds. Cognitive and somatic anxiety also negatively affects rebounds in attack. There is also an increase in the number of errors as self-confidence decreases. In conclusion, the present study sheds light on the relationship among leadership, psychological aspects, and performance in basketball players; further studies will be needed to better understand this relationship, especially through the increase in the number of participants.

Gli atleti hanno compilato il consenso informato e i questionari Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS), Competitive State Anxiety Inventory – 2 (CSAI2), Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire (PMCSQ12) e Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ).

Leadership in sports acts by impacting the psychological components of team sports athletes and their performance. The research analyzes the leadership construct with respect to sports performance and the psychological variables of anxiety, motivational orientation and motivational climate in 4 basketball teams of Serie D and Promozione.
