In Trento's province, the forest sector and the forest-wood-energy supply chain have always been significant for the economic, social and environmental network. In the last few years, the primary wood processing industry has been committed to enhancing local resources, showing growing relevance to the territorial economy. This study is in continuity with those previously carried out by Giovannini, G. (2009) and Delpero T. and Tell M. (2017). The aim was to understand how the most significant events of the last period have impacted the primary woodworking sector. The phenomena analyzed were: the Vaia storm, followed by the invasion of bark beetle (Ips typographus) and Covid-19. Both events were significant for the forestry sector and the Trentino economic and social scenario. To conduct this analysis of 2021, we created a dedicated survey. The method used to collect feedback was direct interviews with business owners, supported by this tailor-made questionnaire. The questions were aligned and compared to the data from the previous research mentioned above. By looking at the survey’s results, we can estimate the state of the sector and highlight the changes in the short and medium term. The survey was conducted between December 2021 and February 2022, involving 115 companies, with an excellent participation rate of 95%. The sector in 2021 was in sharp growth and currently employs 1,393 people, generating a total turnover of over 385 million euros. The volume of raw timber, processed in 2021 by Trentino companies, amounts to 950,900 m3; the forecasts for 2022, net of the large quantities of wood made available by the invasion of Bostrico and the entry of new sawing machinery, set the conditions for exceeding the quota of one million m3. The volumes of semi-finished products used reached 416,175 m3. The company's productions are diversified: starting with the timber in different assortments, passing through the rough and glulam beams used in the production of wooden roofs and houses and ending with the production of all kinds of packaging (pallets, platforms, crates, reels and wooden beam). The high increase in the volumes processed has produced a consequent and significant increase in the waste produced, which amounts to approximately 1,420,000 loose m3, totalling bark, wood chips, sawdust and trimmings. The sector development is also evident in the investments made by companies both in new technologies and machinery and in terms of personnel employed. Overall, 2021 was a year of growth for this sector in Trentino. On the other hand, there is still uncertainty about the steadiness of the sector growth and the amount of wood available in the following years.
