This thesis focuses on how the existing international patent system, governed by the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights agreement (better known as TRIPS), came into being during the Uruguay Round of negotiations of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) that started in 1986. It also tries to relate that genesis with the current pandemic situation and the debates around a TRIPS waiver as a measure of global public health.
