The issue of migration and mass displacement remain highly debated topics to this day, and the tendency on the part of receiving countries remains that of considering the phenomenon as an emergency; consequently, even the regulations and measures put in place constitute an emergency type of response that is, however, inadequate to meet the issues that this phenomenon has given rise to, let alone meet the needs of the people in that situation. Greece, like other EU member states, has witnessed an exponential growth in arrivals in recent decades, particularly from the islands, of people who largely departed from the shores of Turkey. European regulations are not sufficient to protect the multitude of people in transit, who often find themselves caught in regulatory gaps, without rights and consequently without the possibility of using services, thus finding themselves in precarious living conditions. Non-profit associations and volunteers find themselves playing an important role in this regard, as they try to fill those gaps left by laws and to make up for the shortcomings of governments. Within this framework, the present research work was carried out in the community centre of the non-profit association Vasilika Moon onlus, active in Greece since 2016, to investigate the importance of social support in the psychological adaptation strategies of asylum seekers and refugees. In general, the analysis showed that people reported different psychological adaptation strategies, put in place to cope with stress, and positively evaluated the importance of social support of close people in coping with daily difficulties. Another important observation that emerged concerns the role of NGOs; the qualitative analysis revealed very positive responses with respect to the perceived and real support from the association within which the research was carried out, in contrast to the scores given to the perceived practical support from the institutions and the Greek government. This research is only a small glimpse into a broad phenomenon, which demonstrates the capacity of human beings to 'adapt' despite difficulties; however, much more could be done to support people who transit, or who choose to remain in their host countries in the European Union.

Abstract
This research is only a small glimpse into a broad phenomenon, which demonstrates the capacity of human beings to 'adapt' despite difficulties; however, much more could be done to support people who transit, or who choose to remain in their host countries in the European Union.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
