This paper aims to analyze the concept of social inequality in modern Western societies. Starting with a definition of the concept and questioning the social justice implications of it,the essay will attempt to show that extreme inequality is profoundly harmful to society, not only to the most disadvantaged people. The consequences of inequality are psychological, social, and political in nature and have repercussions on politics and the very meaning of democracy, which should be based on representation. Finally, this essay will try to provide insights about possible solutions and possible new directions that states could take.
