The aim of the study is to reconstruct the historical background of the gradual drying up of the Aral Sea, focusing on its international implications as a result of the subsequent policy of the Central Asian countries regarding the water resources of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya. Its main content is based on qualitative method through a comprehensive study of historical events, official documents, agreements on water and energy resources in the Central Asian region, a report and review of independent organizations, regional institutions, research publications. The obtained result indicates a causal relationship between the unsustainable management of water resources during the Soviet rule, and the Central Asian countries' policy in the framework of the restoration of the Aral Sea and the management of water resources of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers. The analysis of the collected documents on projects for the restoration of the Aral Sea, bilateral multilateral agreements, as well as within the framework of water resources management of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya Rivers, which after the collapse of the Soviet Union is more symbolic, emphasizes.
