The term “hikikomori” has spread mainly in Japan and indicates a disorder characterized by a form of social withdrawal that involves adolescents and young adults who confine themselves inside their rooms, avoiding any contact with their family, unable to go to school or work for months or even years. Authors have debated about what the possible causes for hikikomori could be and if it should be considered as an individual problem or if the root is within the Japanese culture in its entirety. The aim of this paper is to explore the concept of hikikomori, to analyze the epidemiological aspects, clinical characteristics, risk factors and interventions. Treatment strategies include psychotherapy, rehabilitation, pharmacological and biological interventions but there is no sufficient research data that demonstrate their effectiveness.

Abstract
The term “hikikomori” has spread mainly in Japan and indicates a disorder characterized by a form of social withdrawal that involves adolescents and young adults who confine themselves inside their rooms, avoiding any contact with their family, unable to go to school or work for months or even years. Authors have debated about what the possible causes for hikikomori could be and if it should be considered as an individual problem or if the root is within the Japanese culture in its entirety. The aim of this paper is to explore the concept of hikikomori, to analyze the epidemiological aspects, clinical characteristics, risk factors and interventions. Treatment strategies include psychotherapy, rehabilitation, pharmacological and biological interventions but there is no sufficient research data that demonstrate their effectiveness.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
