The aim of the thesis project concerns the synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) and zinc sulphide (ZnS) nanoparticles. These compounds have chemical-physical and functional properties of technological interest finding application in many fields. In this thesis work the ZnO and ZnS nanoparticles were synthesized through wet chemistry approaches: biogenic synthesis and hydrothermal synthesis. Biogenic synthesis, considered an ecological, economical and sustainable method to produce nanoparticles, was carried out in the presence of the microalga Nannochloropsis gaditana. For each type of synthesis, different experimental parameters were changed, such as reaction temperature and molar ratio between the reactants. The synthesised nanoparticles were characterised with different techniques, and in view of their applications in the field of optical bioimaging, their cytotoxicity in human cells was analysed, evaluating the differences between the nanoparticles synthesised with the different synthesis methods.
