Taboo language and humour: the challenges of translating the "War and Peas" comics

One interesting area of translation, on which research started to focus quite recently, is multimedia texts, where the translator has to deal with the presence of multiple channels of communication. In this specific work, what was taken into consideration was the translation of comics, where the verbal and the visual channels intertwine with each other. A characteristic feature of this media is the presence of humour, which has always being particularly resistant to the linguistic and cultural transfer. Humour is deeply rooted in one’s community's culture, as well as depending on individual personal taste: it does not always make people laugh; it may even offend or cause indignation. This dissertation focuses on the study of those areas that are considered offensive or rude, "taboos", and on their translation when the jokes are drawn from them. In particular, this work intends to analyse the comic strips of the German authors "War and Peas", unpublished in Italy, and to suggest a translation based on the theoretical knowledge gained through the study of the work of several scholars on the translation of comics, humour and taboo language.

Un'area interessante della traduzione, su cui la ricerca si è concentrata solamente negli ultimi anni, è quella dei testi multimediali, dove il traduttore deve confrontarsi con la presenza di diversi canali di comunicazione. In questo elaborato, è stata presa in considerazione la traduzione dei fumetti, dove il canale visivo e quello verbale si intrecciano nella formazione di un unico messaggio. Caratteristica chiave di questo mezzo è la presenza dello humour, da sempre particolarmente resistente al trasferimento linguistico e culturale. Lo humour è profondamente radicato nella cultura di una comunità, nonché soggetto ai gusti personali dell'individuo: non sempre è fonte di risate; talvolta può persino offendere o creare indignazione. Questa tesi si concentra sullo studio di quegli ambiti che vengono considerati offensivi o volgari, i "taboo", e sulla loro traduzione quando le battute umoristiche attingono da essi. In particolare, è obiettivo di questo elaborato analizzare le strisce fumettistiche degli autori tedeschi "War and Peas", i cui albi sono inediti in Italia, e proporre una traduzione basata sulle conoscenze teoriche acquisite tramite lo studio dei lavori di diversi studiosi sulla traduzione dei fumetti, dello humour e del linguaggio dei taboo.
