Simplification of scientific texts: methodology and strategy

The present dissertation explores the simplification of technical and scientific texts in order to find out what are the best techniques to improve popular science. A brief introduction is dedicated to science and scientific communication, which represent ancient activities that have been investigated by many authors over the years. Thereafter, the main characteristics of scientific language are illustrated. The second section provides some background about what is the simplification of texts, how it is usually carried out and the main strategies used to simplify complex texts. In addition, an overview of the major readability formulas is provided. Finally, the last section presents the actual simplification of some scientific abstracts, whose complexity has been measured by readability formulas and a comment for each text explains the strategies used to simplify it.

Il presente elaborato esplora la semplificazione di testi scientifici con lo scopo di trovare le migliori tecniche e strategie per accrescere la divulgazione scientifica. Una breve introduzione è dedicata alla comunicazione della scienza (science communication) e alla comunicazione scientifica (scientific communication), le quali rappresentano attività antiche che sono state oggetto di studio da molti autori nel corso degli anni. Successivamente, vengono illustrate le principali caratteristiche della lingua della scienza quale linguaggio speciale. La seconda parte dell'elaborato fornisce una panoramica su cos'è la semplificazione di testi, come viene solitamente effettuata e le principali strategie utilizzate per semplificare testi complessi. Inoltre, vengono illustrate le principali formule di leggibilità. Infine, l'ultima parte del presente elaborato presenta la reale semplificazione di alcuni abstract scientifici, la cui complessità è stata misurata dalle formule di leggibilità e un commento per ogni testo spiega le caratteristiche usate per semplificarlo.
