La Russia in Africa Subsahariana, uno studio dei casi di Repubblica Centrafricana e Sudafrica

The focus of this thesis is the analysis of the Russian presence in Africa, starting from the historical ties that the Russian Empire had with the continent. To this end, we focus on the role of people of African origin and descent in Russian society between the Empire and the Soviet Union, before moving on to Soviet military interventions in Southern Africa. The heart of the analysis focuses on the current evolution of Moscow's relations with African states, its methods of intervention, the role of the Wagner group and the type of influence projected. We will deal with two case studies, the Central African Republic and South Africa, very different in terms of problems and consequent methods of intervention. The thesis reflects upon the aim of the Russian presence, and whether it does not constitute a different, veiled form of imperialism.

In questa tesi ci si propone di analizzare il fenomeno della presenza russa in Africa, partendo dai legami storici che l’Impero russo ha avuto con il continente. A questo scopo, ci si sofferma sul ruolo di persone di origine e discendenza africana nella società russa tra Impero e Unione Sovietica, per poi passare agli interventi militari sovietici nel sud dell’Africa. Il cuore dell’analisi si concentra sull’evoluzione attuale dei rapporti di Mosca con gli Stati africani, i suoi metodi di intervento, il ruolo del gruppo Wagner e il tipo di influenza proiettata. Ci si occuperà di due case studies, la Repubblica Centrafricana e il Sudafrica, molto diversi per problematiche e modalità di intervento conseguenti. Nella tesi ci si interroga su quali siano gli scopi della presenza russa, e se essa non costituisca una diversa forma, velata, di imperialismo.
