Subtitling a Medical Forum: "Heart and Brain Disease in Women: Sex and Gender Connection"

The present dissertation proposes an Italian subtitled version of the Medical Forum "Heart and Brain Disease in Women: Sex and Gender Connection", broadcast on the Harvard University YouTube channel. The translation has been carried out with a corpus-based approach, which enables to better tackle the register variation encompassed in the forum, due to the intervention of both experts and laypeople. The practical work is supported by theoretical overviews of both audiovisual and specialised translation. More precisely, the first chapter is dedicated to outlining the theoretical background of the history and practice of audiovisual translation, with a particular focus on the translation mode of subtitling. The following chapter tackles special languages and specialised discourse, with an emphasis on medical translation and the features of its discourse and a brief mention of the theory behind a corpus-based approach to specialised translation. Finally, the formal theories afore investigated will be applied to a practical exercise of a potential real-life task, which can imply subtitling and translating an audiovisual product. This will be analysed in the third chapter, where the temporal and spatial constraints encountered while subtitling along with the terminological issues and translation strategies employed throughout the translation process will be reported and discussed.
