Cinema Sordo - Oltre la barriera del suono

When people talk about deafness, they generally link it to the lack of meaning. The recognition of the existence of Deaf Culture and Deafhood, which instead pivot to the expression of Deaf Identity as an opportunity, changes this viewpoint. Deaf Cinema is born precisely at the point where this perspective is taken and the world is viewed through the "Deaf lens": it is a manifestation of the Deaf experience of reality, with its own structural characteristics founded in Sign Language, the natural language of Deaf people, and in the visual modality. It is a type of cinema that does not translate sound into visual, but creates a unique visual rhythm on the screen, which represents the core of Deaf Culture. Deaf Cinema proves to be a revolutionary tool that overcomes accessibility, overcomes "the sound barrier," building a bridge that puts the hearing world and the deaf world on the same plane, placing them in a climate conducive to contamination and exchange. Thus, Deaf Cinema is a representation of inclusion, an analysis of possibilities, and a necessary journey toward the discovery of a culture that is not yet sufficiently recognized by the artistic as well as the historical and social environment. Giving Deaf Culture the value it deserves would represent an enrichment for humanity: starting with the study of its history, still unknown to many, and the discovery of the artistic potential of Deaf vision, thanks to the contribution of experts in the field belonging to the Deaf world, it will be possible to determine a definition of Deaf Cinema. Finally, this was born and can be concretely realized thanks to Signplicity, a project born in 2020 on the shores of the lake of Revine Lago (TV) and which sees the collaboration of young hearing, deaf and C.O.D.A. researchers with the aim of creating an inclusive space in which to enhance the artistic potential of Deaf Culture, Deafhood and Deaf Talent.

Quando si parla di sordità, generalmente la si lega alla mancanza di un senso. La presa d’atto dell’esistenza della Cultura Sorda e della Deafhood, che invece fanno perno sull’espressione dell’Identità Sorda come opportunità, cambia questo punto di vista. Il Cinema Sordo nasce proprio nel punto in cui si assume questa prospettiva e si guarda il mondo attraverso la “lente sorda”: è manifestazione dell’esperienza sorda della realtà, con delle proprie caratteristiche strutturali fondate nella Lingua dei Segni, lingua naturale delle persone sorde, e nella modalità visiva. È un tipo di cinema che non traduce il sonoro in visivo, ma che crea sullo schermo un ritmo visivo unico, che rappresenta il nucleo della Cultura Sorda. Il Cinema Sordo si dimostra uno strumento rivoluzionario che supera l’accessibilità, supera “la barriera del suono”, costruendo un ponte che mette sullo stesso piano il mondo udente e il mondo sordo, ponendoli in un clima favorevole alla contaminazione e allo scambio. Il Cinema Sordo è quindi rappresentazione dell’inclusione, dell’analisi delle possibilità, e un viaggio necessario verso la scoperta di una cultura non ancora sufficientemente riconosciuta dall’ambiente artistico, ma anche storico e sociale. Dare alla Cultura Sorda il valore che merita rappresenterebbe una ricchezza per l’umanità: a partire dallo studio della sua storia, a molti ancora sconosciuta, e dalla scoperta delle potenzialità artistiche della visione sorda, grazie al contributo di esperti del settore appartenenti al mondo sordo, sarà possibile determinare una definizione di Cinema Sordo. Infine, questa nasce e può concretamente realizzarsi grazie a Signplicity, progetto nato nel 2020 sulle sponde del lago di Revine Lago (TV) e che vede la collaborazione di giovani ricercatori udenti, sordi e C.O.D.A. con lo scopo di creare uno spazio inclusivo in cui valorizzare le potenzialità artistiche della Cultura Sorda, la Deafhood e il Deaf Talent.
