Combining sociological, historical and visual research, the present thesis aims to investigate racisms and anti-racisms in 1970s Britain, with a particular focus on the anti-racist movement ‘Rock Against Racism’. The first part of the research will include the sociological definition of race and racisms and the investigation of the concepts of systemic racisms, whiteness and the white racial frame. It will also include an in-depth analysis of incidents of racist prejudice and violence affecting racialised minorities in the 1970s and their main causes. The second part of the research will be dedicated to anti-racist activism and will investigate how the ‘Rock Against Racism’ movement made British people become aware of racisms and influence them to take a stand and fight to promote racial equality. The investigation of these subjects will be carried out in connection with the analysis of the documentary “White Riot” by Rubika Shah, who brought the history of RAR on the screen for the first time. The documentary recounts the initiatives and efforts of ‘Rock Against Racism’ and recognizes the movement’s impact on British society, inspiring its viewers to engage in anti-racism. For this reason, it will be analysed both as source of information but also as an example of art activism. Taking into account the results of the analysis of the documentary, the final part of the thesis will be dedicated to the construction of historical parallels between 1970s Britain and today’s Europe, focusing on recent racist phenomena, their causes and possible solutions.
