The present work focuses on an initial genetic characterization of a reintroduced population of spadefoot toad (Pelobates fuscus) in the Bosco Nordio Integral Natural Reserve (Chioggia, VE), and of the source population at Porto Caleri (Rosolina, RO). In order to analyze the genetic diversity of the populations of interest for their future management, mitochondrial cytochrome b was characterized and microsatellite markers were isolated and applied. The results obtained suggest genetic isolation of the two populations from other Italian and extra-Italian ones and the hypothesis of a founder effect in Bosco Nordio individuals, due to incomplete representation of the source population in the reintroduction process.

Abstract
The present work focuses on an initial genetic characterization of a reintroduced population of spadefoot toad (Pelobates fuscus) in the Bosco Nordio Integral Natural Reserve (Chioggia, VE), and of the source population at Porto Caleri (Rosolina, RO). In order to analyze the genetic diversity of the populations of interest for their future management, mitochondrial cytochrome b was characterized and microsatellite markers were isolated and applied. The results obtained suggest genetic isolation of the two populations from other Italian and extra-Italian ones and the hypothesis of a founder effect in Bosco Nordio individuals, due to incomplete representation of the source population in the reintroduction process.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
