Termes complexes ou collocations terminologiques? Deux entités terminologiques en conflit

ISO 1087: 2019 defines terminology as "the set of designations and concepts belonging to one domain or subject". In addition, the science of terminology is defined - in the same standard - as "the science studying terminologies, aspects of terminology work, the resulting terminology resources and terminological data". Terms (in simple or complex form) and the specific concepts they designate are therefore the central object of this discipline and research field. This dissertation is specifically devoted to the terminological debate on the identification (manual or automatic) and distinction of two terminological entities: complex terms and terminological collocations. Indeed, these two entities are often confused in terminology, and, at the level of terminology research and data processing, they seem to be very difficult to distinguish. For this reason, this dissertation aims to explore the most important differences and to try to clarify this debate, which has not found a real resolution yet. Through the many opinions that terminologists have expressed on this subject, we will therefore try to present methodologies and analysis criteria that can help us to identify and distinguish complex terms from terminological collocations. We will start from the most traditional approaches to the most recent techniques based on (semi)-automatic data processing tools (e.g. BiTermEx). Finally, we will propose examples of methods for the encoding of both complex terms and terminological collocations that can allow a good distinction and definition of these two entities.

La norme ISO 1087 : 2019 définit la terminologie comme l’« ensemble des désignations et des concepts appartenant à un domaine ou à un sujet ». En plus, la science de la terminologie est définie – dans la même norme - comme la « science étudiant les terminologies, les aspects du travail terminologique, et les ressources terminologiques et données terminologiques qui en découlent ». Les termes (en forme simple ou complexe) et les concepts spécifiques qu’ils désignent constituent donc l’objet central de cette discipline et domaine de recherche. Ce mémoire se consacre spécifiquement au débat terminologique portant sur l’identification (manuelle ou automatique) et sur la distinction de deux entités terminologiques : les termes complexes et les collocations terminologiques. En effet, ces deux entités sont souvent confondues en terminologie et, au niveau de la recherche et du traitement des données terminologiques, elles semblent être très difficiles à distinguer. Pour cette raison, ce mémoire vise donc à l’exploration des différences les plus importantes en essayant de clarifier ce débat qui n’a pas encore trouvé une véritable résolution. À travers les nombreuses opinions que les terminologues ont exposées à ce propos, nous essayerons donc de présenter des méthodologies et des critères d’analyse qui peuvent nous aider à identifier et à distinguer les termes complexes des collocations terminologiques. Nous commencerons des approches les plus traditionnelles jusqu’aux techniques les plus récentes basées sur des outils de traitement de données (semi)-automatiques (par exemple, BiTermEx). Enfin, nous proposerons des exemples de méthodes pour l’encodage et des termes complexes et des collocations terminologiques qui puissent permettre une bonne distinction et définition de ces deux entités.
