Russian ballet was born under the reign of Peter the Great, but it has its roots in the ancient East Slavic traditions. Lively rhythms, pagan beliefs and the connection to a wild and limitless nature shaped the Russian folk dance, the result of expressive needs rooted in the soul of these people. This was the origin of one of the most prestigious institutions in the ballet world: the Russian ballet school. Y. Bakhrushin, with his Istoriya russkogo baleta, not only goes back to the genesis and the most significant points of the art of ballet, but he also offers a multi-layered analysis of Russian dance. The text investigates the relationship between the Russian and European artistic worlds and the political weight behind each performance. Furthermore, it describes the most famous dancers, choreographers, and masters of the Russian and European theatres. The text shows several translation challenges, such as ballet-related technical terms or Russian idiomatic expressions and historical anecdotes, which required a thorough knowledge of ballet from a technical and theoretical perspectives. A commentary has been included to the translation to analyze the difficulties encountered during the translation process and to enhance the source text, this latter rich in cultural curiosities and valuable historical information.
