The thesis focuses on the relationship between Italy and the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991, especially on the political relations between Andreotti and Gorbačëv, which also became personal. Based on the official letters exchanged between the two leaders, it reconstructs the entire political course and the positions of the two countries with regard to the various international issues during these six years up to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, i.e. the end of Gorbačëv's attempt to create a more democratic Soviet Union.
