Corpo e potere. Il problema identitario in Michel Foucault.

This thesis project is concerned with analyzing the thought of philosopher Michel Foucault regarding the themes of power, the body and the problem of identity from the relationship between the first two. In the first chapter of this paper, the themes of power and the body are explored from a theoretical point of view, mainly traversing the work "Overseeing and Punishing" (1975). It is observed how power, in Foucauldian terms, is understood as a mobile and creative relationship that unfolds in a productive activity and structures the field of action within which one moves. Through an analysis of the relationship between power and knowledge, it becomes possible to describe the ways in which this productive activity acts on bodies. Using a genealogical method-proprietary of the French philosopher-the way in which, as the mode of action of such mechanisms changes, the construction of bodies is accompanied and thus the ways in which the emergence of a specific individual is made possible, making evident, moreover, the epistemological transformations of the process of production of knowledge and exercise of power. The target of all this and thus also the protagonist of many Foucauldian writings is the body. The second chapter analyzes how the latter is understood by the French philosopher. By collecting and describing discourses that speak and practices that act on the body, Foucault's thought intersects with the currents of phenomenology and constructivism. Also explored is the theme of resistances, which, as forms of counter-power, are useful in generating new possibilities. So from the spaces of resistance and creation, we come to describe the self as a practice of constant construction, which in order to rebel goes through a practice of self-elaboration, a reinventing of oneself. In the third chapter, through the help of semi-structured interviews carried out with people with experience of detention , stories of individuals deprived of their liberty who tell ways of resisting the mechanism of power will be exposed within the text, stories that will start from a restructuring of the body to arrive at a reworking of the self. So a way of resisting the forms of power will be exposed through a telling of oneself that passes through the body. In conclusion, the usefulness of philosophical- epistemological gaze in order to structure a critical and transformative way of thinking with respect to identity construction will become clear.

Tale progetto di tesi si occupa di analizzare il pensiero del filosofo Michel Foucault per quanto concerne le tematiche del potere, del corpo e del problema identitario a partire dal rapporto tra i primi due. Nel primo capitolo del presente elaborato si approfondiscono le tematiche del potere e del corpo da un punto di vista teorico, attraversando principalmente l’opera “Sorvegliare e Punire” (1975). Si osserva come il potere, in termini foucaultiani, venga inteso come un rapporto mobile e creativo che si dispiega in un’attività produttiva e che struttura il campo d’azione entro cui ci si muove. Tramite l’analisi del rapporto tra potere e sapere risulta possibile descrivere le modalità attraverso cui tale attività produttiva agisce sui corpi. Utilizzando un metodo genealogico-proprio del filosofo francese- viene approfondito il modo in cui, al variare del modo di agire di tali meccanismi, si accompagna la costruzione dei corpi e dunque le modalità in cui si rende possibile l’emergere di uno specifico individuo, rendendo evidenti, inoltre, le trasformazioni epistemologiche del processo di produzione di sapere ed esercitazione del potere. Bersaglio di tutto ciò e dunque anche protagonista di molti scritti foucaultiani è il corpo. Nel secondo capitolo si analizza il modo in cui quest’ultimo viene inteso dal filosofo francese. Raccogliendo e descrivendo i discorsi che parlano e le pratiche che agiscono sul corpo, il pensiero di Foucault si interseca con le correnti della fenomenologia e del costruttivismo. Viene inoltre approfondito il tema delle resistenze, che, in qualità di forme di contro-potere, risultano utili a generare nuove possibilità. Dunque a partire dagli spazi di resistenza e creazione si giunge a descrivere il sé come una pratica di costruzione costante che per ribellarsi passa attraverso una pratica di elaborazione di sé, un reinventarsi. Nel terzo capitolo, tramite l’ausilio di interviste semi-strutturate svolte con persone con esperienza di detenzione, si espongono, all’interno del testo, storie di individui privati della libertà che raccontano modi di resistere al meccanismo del potere, storie che partiranno da una ristrutturazione del corpo per giungere ad una rielaborazione del sé. Dunque verrà esposto un modo di resistere alle forme del potere tramite un raccontarsi che passa per il corpo. A conclusione risulterà chiara l’utilità di uno sguardo filosofico-epistemologico per poter strutturare un modo di pensare critico e trasformativo rispetto alla costruzione identitaria.
