In this thesis will be addressed the problem of mishandled bags in airports, which represents a huge issue for airlines companies. In particular the focus will be on the problem caused by unexpected breakdowns of the system due to poor or lack of good maintenance. Therefore in the remainder of the thesis new maintenance methods, using Internet of Things (IoT), Edge Device and other type of technologies typical of Industry 4.0, will be presented, and the final solution developed will be shown at the end. A test centre in Nuremberg and the Dubai airport will be used to test and to check the feasibility of the solution proposed. Finally, results obtained in the Dubai airport with the new maintenance system will be presented, showing that defection and problematic situation are correctly detected and identified and therefore can be fixed before the failures happen. This innovative solution, called 360, that uses vibration sensor, cameras and laser distance sensor, can reduce the cost and the time spent in maintenance operation improving the reliability of the baggage handling system and consequently reducing the number of delayed bags.
