The aim of the study is to provide a contribution to the Italian translation and validation of the short version of the Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (DEBQ; Bailly et al., 2012), which considers three eating styles: emotional, restrictive and external style. A further aim is to examine the convergent and criterion validity of the DEBQ by studying the correlations between the three dimensions of the short scale and the dimensions of perceived academic stress, subjective well-being and consumption of low and high-calorie snacks. The last purpose is to test a multiple regression model that considers as dependent variables the habit of consuming low and high-calorie snacks and as predictors the DEBQ dimensions and the effort-reward ratio, controlling for gender and body mass index. The questionnaire was administered to a convenience sample of 1111 Italian university students, aged 18-35, of which 38.5% were female. Results suggest that DEBQ is a reliable and valid instrument and that the female students average score is higher than those of male students in all the three dimensions of the DEBQ. Women also experience a higher overall level of stress than men. All three eating styles measured by the DEBQ are positively associated with the level of self-perceived stress. Furthermore, negative feelings are positively associated with emotional and restrictive eating styles. Finally, the results of the hierarchical multiple regression analysis show that the habit of consuming low-calorie snacks is predicted by the restrictive eating style; this style inhibits the habit of consuming high-calorie snacks, whereas, the emotional and external eating style appear to promote the consumption of high-calorie snacks. From an application point of view, these findings allow to propose interventions to foster students' awareness of their diet in order to encourage healthy eating habits.

Abstract

A contribution to the validation of a short version of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire. A study on eating styles of Italian university students
