Background: The experience of infertility can affect women's physical and psychological well-being, as well as being a stressful event that can activate the attachment system, triggering the search for a partner's emotional closeness. Although the literature exposes how the role of body experience is relevant in the interpersonal context of attachment, in the field of psychological studies on infertility, this connection is poorly investigated. The aim of this research, therefore, was to investigate the effect of attachment style on anxiety and depressive symptomatology, hypothesizing that body appreciation might play a mediating role in such a relationship. Methods: The sample included 103 women engaged in a couple relationship who were undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART). A questionnaire was administered in which socio-demographic characteristics, data on clinical infertility status, and selected constructs were explored. The instruments used in investigating these constructs were: the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised (ECR-R) for adult attachment, the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) for body appreciation, the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) for anxiety symptomatology, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) for depressive symptomatology. Results: The results showed that anxiety in attachment shows a dual effect, both direct and indirect, mediated by body appreciation, exerted on anxious and depressive symptomatology. Conclusions: The results suggest that, among women undergoing ART pathways, anxiety in adult attachment and poor body appreciation are significantly associated with the manifestation of anxiety- and depression-related symptoms.
