The main goal of this essay is the translation from Spanish to Italian of the children’s graphic novel La pequeña genia y la partida de shatranj, written by Álvaro Ortiz in 2022. The graphic novel tells the story of a genie girl and two friends of hers that, living in an undefined city of One Thousand and One Nights, have to cross the desert in order to rescue the sultan of the city. With the translation of this comic, the difficulties that a translator must face when translating a piece of literature belonging to children's literature or comics genres can be appreciated. The translator must be very attentive, as there are many aspects to consider. The main aspects are the needs of readers, comics’ technical aspects (e.g., space), and the translation of source culture elements that do not have an equivalent in the target culture. The translation has been accomplished using the interpretative-communicative method and techniques presented by Hurtado Albir (2001), and a strategy based on two of the four macro strategies formulated by Lörscher (1991).
