La traduction audiovisuelle: le cas des courts-métrages L'entrave et Frimas

This dissertation deals with a fairly recent branch of translation, namely audiovisual translation, in particular with the Italian subtitling of two short films, one French and the other Quebecois. This subject is first presented from a theoretical point of view, focusing on the constraints of subtitling and the steps involved in making subtitles, including the classification of strategies proposed by Diaz Cintas and Ramael. The central theme of the two short films, namely the right to abortion, is then presented with a comparison of its evolution in the three countries involved: Italy, France and Quebec. In the second part of this work, the focus shifts from theory to practice, concentrating on the analysis of the domain-related terminology that emerged from the dialogues and on the study of the strategies used to produce the subtitles. The analysis shows that, although specific terminology is a fundamental element of specialised translation, it can also appear in audiovisual products. Furthermore, although there are no universally accepted rules in subtitling, this field borrows many strategies from literary translation, while possessing unique and distinctive aspects, such as the constant use of textual reduction, which make it a branch of translation on its own.

Ce mémoire porte sur une branche assez récente de la traduction, à savoir la traduction audiovisuelle, en particulier sur le sous-titrage en italien de deux courts-métrages francophones, l'un français et l'autre québécois. Ce sujet est d'abord présenté d'un point de vue théorique, en se concentrant sur les contraintes du sous-titrage et les étapes de réalisation des sous-titres, notamment sur la classification des stratégies proposée par Diaz Cintas et Ramael. Le thème central des deux courts-métrages, à savoir le droit à l'avortement, est ensuite présenté, en faisant une comparaison sur son évolution dans les trois pays d’intérêt : l'Italie, la France et le Québec. Dans la deuxième partie de ce travail, l'accent passe de la théorie à la pratique, en se concentrant sur l'analyse de la terminologie liée au domaine en question qui a émergé des dialogues et sur l'étude des stratégies utilisées pour produire les sous-titres. L'analyse montre que, bien qu'une terminologie spécifique soit un élément fondamental de la traduction spécialisée, elle peut également apparaître dans les produits audiovisuels. De plus, bien qu'il n'existe pas de règles universellement acceptées dans le domaine du sous-titrage, celui-ci emprunte de nombreuses stratégies à la traduction littéraire, tout en possédant des aspects uniques et distinctifs, tels que le recours constant à la réduction textuelle, qui en font aujourd'hui une branche de la traduction à part entière.
