The research, pursued with a cultural and gender approach, investigates the representations of male violence against women in the late 19th century with the aim of understanding how female adultery was conceived, virile manhood regulated, and femicide historically legitimized. Among the examined sources, there are Italian law and criminological treatises on one side, while on the other a corpus of nearly fifty opera librettos, all written between 1890 and 1905 and falling under the umbrella of “plebian melodrama”, were thoroughly investigated. This genre is known for always having an adulterous triangle at the very core of the plot that culminates in one of the spouses’ violent death (usually being the adulterous wife). The rhetorical analysis of these melodramas, which are thus far consumed by large audiences who were greatly emotionally involved in these scenes of love and death, unravels how femicides committed by cheated male lovers have been strongly romanticized and expressed through the language of both honor and passion.
L’indagine, condotta con una prospettiva culturale e di genere, ha studiato le rappresentazioni della violenza maschile contro le donne a fine Ottocento con lo scopo di capire come l’adulterio femminile è stato concepito, la mascolinità virile normata e il femminicidio legittimato storicamente. Le fonti esaminate sono state da un lato il diritto e la trattatistica criminologica italiani, dall’altro un corpus di circa cinquanta di libretti d’opera, scritti tutti tra il 1890 e il 1905 e appartenenti al filone del “melodramma plebeo”. Questo genere si distingue per avere sempre al centro del plot un triangolo adulterino che si risolve nella morte violenta di uno dei coniugi (solitamente la compagna adultera). L’analisi retorica di questi melodrammi, tra l’altro consumati da un vasto pubblico emotivamente partecipe a queste scene di amore e morte, ha rivelato come il femminicidio da parte dell’amante tradito sia stato oggetto di una forte romanticizzazione espressa sia attraverso il linguaggio dell’onore sia quello della passione.
