The dissertation discusses the decorative stucco elements realised in the Khirbat al-Mafjar between the 7th and 8th centuries. The palace, renowned especially for its mosaics, provides extraordinary exemples of architectural variety and stucco decorations. The paper demonstrates how the stuccos of Khirbat al-Mafjar, especially those with geometric, plant motifs and shaped figure are inspired by previous artistic traditions, from the Greco-Roman to the Byzantine, from Sasanian to Visigothic art, becoming a real characteristic of the Islamic art
La tesi si occupa degli aspetti decorativi in stucco realizzati nel Khirbat al-Mafjar tra VII e VIII secolo. Il palazzo, famoso soprattutto per i suoi mosaici, offre straordinari esempi di varietà architettoniche e decorazioni realizzate in stucco. L’elaborato dimostra come gli stucchi di Khirbat al-Mafjar, specialmente quelli a motivi geometrici, vegetali e figure modellate siano ispirati alle tradizioni artistiche precedenti, da quella greco-romana alla bizantina, dall’arte sasanide a quella visigota, divenendo un vero e proprio elemento distintivo dell’arte islamica.
