Fachsprachliche (medizinische) Elemente in einem schöngeistigen Werk und ihre Übersetzung ins Litauische. Fallbeispiel: Thomas Manns "Der Zauberberg"

The thesis deals with the medical LSP (Language for Specific Purposes) in a work of fiction and its translation from German into Lithuanian. Based on the assumption that the translation of LSP in fiction differs from the specialized translation of non-fictional texts, this thesis aims to identify the distinctive features, translation techniques and strategies of the LSP elements in Thomas Mann's novel “The Magic Mountain”, focusing on the discrepancies between the LSP expressions in the source and target texts and the use of archaisms. The selected material was used to create a bilingual corpus using the Sketch Engine software. This allowed to analyze the LSP elements and to classify them according to their LSP level change or obsolescence for a final evaluation of their translation technique. The results showed a rather significant but partially compensated variation of the LSP level with a slight upward tendency, depending on the mode of translation and the lack of equivalents in the target language. The LSP level increased with equivalent substitution, concretisation and explication, and decreased with generalization, paraphrasing and omission (implication). A tendency to modernise medical terms during translation indicated not only a strategy to facilitate the reader's understanding (domestication), but also the unequal development of the LSP in the source and target languages.
