Effect of alpha-synuclein protein in Parkinson Disease and its connection with gastrointestinal tract

Parkinson disease has different kinds of pathological features,one hallamark is the aggregation of α-synuclein (aSyn).The motor deficits of the Parkinson disease are associated with the pathology of asyn in the substantia nigra.Although,there are patients that suffer non motor symptoms ,which occur at the prodromal phase of the disease most specifically before the PD is diagnosed.Many of these symptoms occur due to the gastrointestinal system and some data support that there is a potential connection of the occurance of the pathological alpha synuclein which is within the GIT.For a clear identification of pathological asyn in the gut there are biopsies,autopsies.However, some methods are missing in order to have a proper discrimination between the physiological and pathological forms of enteral asyn.Future data will determine the differences or the connection between the alpha synuclein and gut in Parkinson patients.
