This thesis aims to analyse the modes of unreliable narration used in Jonathan Littell's The Kindly Ones. The study consists of two lines of analysis: the first, narratological, focuses on the phenomenon of the unreliability of the narrator's voice and traces the history of its conceptualisation from its first definition in Booth 1983, up to the recent critical theories of a cognitivist framework by Nunning (2015). The second, thematically, aims to identify the ways in which complicity with the historical violence of the Third Reich and Nazism is represented. The aim is to interrogate Littell's novel from a specific prospective: the unreliable narration, one of the most sophisticated rhetorical procedures with which writers have staged the human capacity to contradict the world, recreate it, imagine it and tell it otherwise. The project aims to frame this morphological variant of the narrator in historical, theoretical and analytical terms. Finally, Littell's novel will be compared with other contemporary novels that testify to an ambiguous use of unreliable narration and in which the relationship of complicity with historical violence is thematised: Javier Cercas's Soldados de Salamina and Giorgio Falco's La gemella H.
La tesi intende analizzare le modalità di narrazione inattendibile utilizzate ne Le Benevole di Jonathan Littell. Lo studio è costituito da due linee d’analisi: la prima, di taglio narratologico, si concentra sul fenomeno dell’inattendibilità della voce narrante e ripercorre la storia della sua concettualizzazione a partire dalla prima definizione in Booth (1983), sino alle recenti teorie critiche di impianto cognitivista di Nunning (2015). La seconda, tematica, mira a individuare le modalità della rappresentazione della complicità con la violenza storica del Terzo Reich e del nazismo. L’obiettivo è interrogare il romanzo di Littell da una prospettiva specifica: la narrazione inattendibile. Il progetto si propone di inquadrare sotto il profilo storico e teorico questa variante morfologica della voce narrante. Infine, il romanzo di Littell verrà messo a confronto con altre due testimonianze finzionali contemporanee in cui è tematizzato il rapporto di complicità con la violenza storica: Soldati di Salamina di Javier Cercas e La gemella H di Giorgio Falco.
