The Sikh community in Italy, with its 61 gurdwārā, is the largest in Continental Europe. The following thesis is the result of a field research conducted by the author for nine months at one of these temples: the Gurdwārā Dasmesh Darbār, in the province of Bologna, where the local sangat meets. The first chapter, with a historical slant, traces the history of Sikhism from the first Gurū to the 20th century; the second chapter, with a ethnological slant, describes the history and the characteristics of the Sikh diaspora in Europe and Italy, focusing above all on Emilia-Romagna; the third chapter enters into the heart of the field research, illustrating the daily ritual practices, the festivals and the internal organisation of the gurdwārā in Bologna implemented by the local community.
