Intergroup contact stands out as one of the most promising and effective strategies in mitigating prejudice. Notably, it not only enhances attitudes towards encountered individuals from different groups but also extends to improving perceptions of the entire outgroup, other outgroups, and even boosts cognitive flexibility. This study aims to investigate the effect of vicarious intergroup contact on cognitive and attitudinal outcomes. Preliminary findings suggest that vicarious intergroup contact has a positive impact on cognitive and attitudinal outcomes. Findings indicate that indirect exposure to positive intergroup interactions can lead to cognitive and attitudinal changes that promote intergroup understanding and harmony. By utilizing vicarious intergroup contact strategies, such as media portrayals or narratives depicting positive intergroup interactions, it may be possible to foster more positive attitudes and cognitive flexibility. Future research should explore the long-term effects of vicarious intergroup contact and investigate potential mechanisms underlying its influence on cognitive and attitudinal outcomes.

Abstract

Investigating the Effect of Vicarious Intergroup Contact on Cognitive and Attitudinal Outcomes
