This thesis examines the crisis in Mali, focusing on understanding its origins, international reactions, and the subsequent humanitarian challenges and contributions. In Chapter 1, the impact of the 2011 Libyan crisis on the coup in Mali is explored, highlighting the role of Tuareg groups and the presence of Islamist organizations in the region. The international response to the coup and subsequent interventions are analyzed. Chapter 2 delves into the humanitarian challenges faced in Mali. The concept of humanitarian assistance is defined, and Africa's overall need for assistance is explored. The beginning of the complex emergency situation in Mali together with the methodology used to analyze and evaluate key aspects of UN reports are examined. Key areas of humanitarian assistance in response to the crisis are identified, including food security, WASH needs, protection of IDPs and refugees, and access to education. Additionally, the challenges faced by the media and journalists in Mali are discussed. In Chapter 3, the focus shifts to humanitarian actors and their contributions to Mali. Expert comments and assessments of humanitarian aid in the country are examined, with specific attention given to the misuse of humanitarian aid. its timely and equitable manner, along with the fulfilment of promised assistance. An assessment of current humanitarian needs in Mali is conducted, and the evolution of humanitarian assistance since 2012 is analyzed. Through a comprehensive exploration of the crisis in Mali and the associated humanitarian challenges, this thesis provides valuable insights into the complexities of the situation and the efforts made by various actors to address the needs of the affected population. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the crisis and offer recommendations for improving future humanitarian responses in Mali.
