This study explores the maurophilic character of one of the most important works of Spanish literature of the "Siglo de Oro", El Abencerraje. Maurophilia refers to the attraction and admiration that Christians showed towards Arab culture and Islamic civilisation in the context of the conquest of Granada, and both the moorish novel and the romances that originated from it are a notable example of literary maurophilia. However, as is well known, this fascination with Moorish culture, as well as the magnanimity towards the enemy, did not have a perfect counterpart in reality. For this reason, the real situation of the Moors before, during and after the Reconquest until the edict of expulsion in 1609 has been investigated in order to establish an adequate contrast between history and fiction. The same has been done with the myth of the lineage of the Abencerrajes, since the historical facts that had them as protagonists have been widely manipulated to turn them into a literary product. Finally, both the novel El Abencerraje and its romanceril legacy were analysed to identify their maurophilic characteristics within the Moorish literary genre, with the aim of proposing clues for further research into this complex paradox that has left a mark on Spanish literature.

Abstract
Finally, both the novel El Abencerraje and its romanceril legacy were analysed to identify their maurophilic characteristics within the Moorish literary genre, with the aim of proposing clues for further research into this complex paradox that has left a mark on Spanish literature.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
