Archives play a key role in industrial heritage. Through business and industrial archives we can recognise those traces of an industrial past that we seek to enhance, recover and bequeath to society. Significantly, business archives materialise the identity of a company. This thesis presents a theoretical and practical approach to business archives, based on an in-depth analysis and research of their beginnings and development during the 20th century. Particularly, the case that is presented here in a paradigmatic way is the archive of the business group Bunge & Born Argentina. Firstly, we present an intellectual and historical overview about archives in a general way, the impact of modernity on archival science today, the role of the state as a the main producer and creator of documents, the use of archives by historiography during the 19th century, and lastly, the first conceptualisations and principles of archival science as an autonomous and independent discipline. In addition, it also analyses the impact of the new theoretical positions on archives originating in the 20th century, where the central principles of archival science have changed noticeably thanks to the impact of postmodernist philosophy. On the other hand, the intrinsic problems of business archives, their characteristics, their forms of organisation and their preservation are also dealt with in depth. Consequently, this thesis presents an overview of the first appraisals and writings on business archives, the different models of business archives that have emerged during the twentieth century in the world, as well as the beginning and the various difficulties that this type of archives have had in Argentina. Last but not least, the role of archivists within this new archival paradigm will be discussed. In order to understand, value and organise the Bunge & Born business archive, it is essential to know deeply its history. Consequently, a whole chapter of this thesis is devoted to recounting and presenting the history of this economic group, one of the most important in Argentina and the world, and a pioneer in the productive diversification that characterised our country during the 20th century. Later, the case of the Bunge & Born business archive is presented in detail. Firstly, the various training courses that have been provided to constitute the archive's staff are dealt with. Subsequently, a detailed analysis is made of all the archival work carried out to organise, identify, conserve, value, catalogue and classify this archive collection. All these activities are presented here with the firm intention of providing a working methodology for this type of archive, especially given the lack of experience in Argentina in organising local business archives. Finally, all the activities carried out for the conservation of the documents of the Bunge & Born archive are presented here, from the cleaning of its documents, as well as the control of temperature and humidity parameters, the external agents that can damage the documents and the elements of storage and conservation recommended for the long-term storage and protection of the documents.
Les archives jouent un rôle clé dans le patrimoine industriel. Grâce aux archives d'entreprises et aux archives industrielles, nous pouvons comprendre ces traces d'un passé industriel que nous cherchons à valoriser, à récupérer et à léguer à la société. Les archives d'entreprise matérialisent l'identité de l'entreprise. Cette mémoire présente une approche théorique et pratique des archives d'entreprise, basée sur une analyse approfondie de leurs débuts et de leur développement au cours du 20e siècle. Le cas qui est présenté de manière paradigmatique, en particulier, est celui des archives de l'entreprise Bunge & Born Argentina. La première partie de cette mémoire présente un aperçu intellectuel et historique de l'origine des archives en général, de l'impact de la modernité sur l'archivistique actuelle, du rôle de l'État en tant que principaux producteur d'archives, de l'utilisation des archives par l'historiographie au cours du 19e siècle, des premières conceptualisations et des principes de l'archivistique en tant que discipline autonome et indépendante. En outre, il analyse également l'impact des nouvelles positions théoriques sur les archives issues du 20e siècle, où les principes centraux de l'archivistique ont changé de manière substantielle grâce à l'impact de la philosophie postmoderniste. D'autre part, les problèmes intrinsèques des archives d'entreprise, leurs caractéristiques, leurs formes d'organisation et leur conservation sont également traités en profondeur. Par conséquent, cette thèse présente un aperçu des premières appréciations et écrits sur les archives d'entreprise, les différents modèles d'archives d'entreprise qui ont émergé au cours du vingtième siècle dans le monde, ainsi que les débuts et les différentes difficultés que ce type d'archives a eus en Argentine. Enfin, le rôle des archivistes dans ce nouveau paradigme archivistique sera discuté. Pour comprendre, valoriser et organiser les archives de Bunge & Born, il est essentiel de connaître leur histoire. Par conséquent, un chapitre entier est consacré au récit et à la présentation de l'histoire de ce groupe économique, l'un des plus importants d'Argentine et du monde, et pionnier de la diversification productive qui a caractérisé notre pays au cours du XXe siècle. Ensuite, le cas des archives de Bunge & Born est présenté en détail. Tout d'abord, les différents cours de formation et les qualifications qui ont été fournis pour constituer le personnel des archives sont abordés. Ensuite, une analyse détaillée de tout le travail archivistique réalisé pour organiser, identifier, conserver, valoriser, cataloguer et classer ce fonds d'archives. Toutes ces activités sont présentées ici avec la ferme intention de fournir une méthodologie de travail pour ce type d'archives, d'autant plus que l'Argentine manque d'expérience en matière d'organisation d'archives d'entreprises locales. Enfin, toutes les activités réalisées pour la conservation des documents des archives de Bunge & Born sont présentées ici, depuis le nettoyage des documents jusqu'au contrôle des paramètres de température et d'humidité, en passant par les agents externes qui peuvent endommager les documents et les éléments de stockage et de conservation recommandés pour le stockage et la protection à long terme des documents.
