Sherlock Holmes is the most famous character in English literature. He became essential to the Victorian society thanks to his serial form of publication in the Strand Magazine. Holmes became the protype of detective thanks to his reason and he was also an intriguing character thanks to his personality. The aim of this dissertation will be to discuss and analyse the impact of Sherlock Holmes in the publishing market, not only for the late Victorians but also for the subsequent writers of detective and crime fiction.
