“RACCONTAMI LA NOSTRA STORIA” Analisi tematica della narrazione familiare adottiva: un confronto tra pre e post adozione

Family storytelling is the process through which the family members share their experiences and co-construct, through a mutual communicative exchange, the family story. It plays a central role in defining the individual’s sense of family, social and cultural identity and belonging. In adoption, the family narrative takes on a peculiar structure, as it represents the telling of a story that is grounded in experiences of lack and separation: the absence of a biological child for the parents and the estrangement from the original family for the child. However, the adoptive family narrative can play an important protective role in the adoption experience, as it represents a means of structuring family relationships, a tool for processing and integrating the traumatic and painful experiences of the past, and a way of ensuring that the child has a sense of continuity with respect to his or her own history. For this reason, it is of paramount importance that the family storytelling be thought out and adequately prepared for by the adoptive parents. The present research is inserted in the theme of adoptive family narrative and aims to investigate how it changes, in the main topics covered, before and after adoption. This is a cross-sectional study of couples awaiting adoption and couples who have already completed the adoption process within an International Adoption Association, asking parents and prospective adoptive parents to write a letter addressed to their imagined or real child, assuming that he or she might ask, "Mom, Dad, why wasn't I born of you?" This question puts the parents in the position of having to construct a narrative, in the form of a letter, of their own and the child's personal story and allows to conduct a thematic content analysis. The letters provided by the two populations of parents were analyzed through the statistical techniques of Text Mining, used specifically for textual analysis, with the exploratory goal of identifying the most frequently addressed concepts and highlighting similarities and differences in themes between the samples, paying particular attention to aspects related to the issues of infertility and child's abandonment history. The results show how the two samples of adoptive parents, in constructing the family narrative, focus on different thematic poles, depending on the concerns and experiences peculiar to the stage of the adoption journey they are going through.

La narrazione familiare è il processo attraverso il quale i diversi componenti di una famiglia condividono le proprie esperienze e i propri vissuti e co-costruiscono, attraverso uno scambio comunicativo reciproco, la storia familiare. Essa ha un ruolo centrale nella definizione del senso di identità e di appartenenza familiare, sociale e culturale dell’individuo. Nell’adozione, la narrazione familiare assume una struttura peculiare, poiché rappresenta il racconto di una storia che pone le sue basi su esperienze di mancanza e separazione: l’assenza di un figlio biologico per i genitori, da un lato, e l’allontanamento dalla famiglia d’origine per il bambino, dall’altro. La narrazione familiare adottiva può avere, però, un importante ruolo protettivo nell’esperienza di adozione, in quanto rappresenta un mezzo di strutturazione dei rapporti familiari, uno strumento per l’elaborazione e l’integrazione dei vissuti traumatici e dolorosi del passato e un modo per garantire al bambino un senso di continuità rispetto alla propria storia. Per questo motivo, è di fondamentale importanza che questa venga pensata e adeguatamente preparata da parte dei genitori adottivi. La presente ricerca si inserisce all’interno del tema della narrazione familiare adottiva e si propone, in particolare, di indagare come questa si modifichi, nei principali temi trattati, prima e dopo l’adozione. Si tratta di uno studio trasversale tra coppie in attesa di adozione e coppie che hanno già concluso l’iter adottivo all’interno di un Ente per le adozioni internazionali, che chiede ai genitori e futuri genitori adottivi di scrivere una lettera rivolta al figlio immaginato o reale, ipotizzando che possa chiedere: “Mamma, papà, perché non sono nato da voi?”. Questa domanda mette i genitori nella condizione di dover costruire una narrazione, sotto forma di lettera, della propria storia personale e di quella del bambino e consente di svolgere un’analisi tematica dei contenuti. Le lettere fornite dalle due popolazioni di genitori sono state analizzate attraverso le tecniche statistiche di Text Mining, usate specificatamente per l’analisi testuale, con l’obiettivo esplorativo di individuare i concetti affrontati più frequentemente e mettere in luce somiglianze e differenze tematiche tra i campioni, ponendo particolare attenzione agli aspetti legati al tema dell’infertilità e a quello della storia di abbandono del bambino. I risultati ottenuti mostrano come i due campioni di genitori adottivi, nella costruzione della narrazione familiare, si concentrino su poli tematici differenti, in funzione delle preoccupazioni e dei vissuti peculiari della fase del percorso adottivo che stanno attraversando.
