Global Value Chain and innovation: evidence from Central and Eastern European companies

This thesis investigates the intricate relationship between global value chains (GVCs) and innovation in the context of Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, examining the results at the firm level, in a field of research unexplored by the existing literature. In recent decades, the CEE region has experienced profound economic transformations, moving from centrally planned economies to market-oriented systems. In this dynamic landscape, the integration of CEE countries into GVCs has emerged as an important driver of economic growth and development. The central premise of this research is to reveal the multiple connections between participation in GVCs and innovation activities in CEE economies.

La tesi indaga l'intricata relazione tra le catene globali del valore (GVC) e l'innovazione nel contesto dei Paesi dell'Europa centrale e orientale (CEE), esaminando i risultati a livello di impresa, in un campo di ricerca inesplorato dalla letteratura esistente. Negli ultimi decenni, la regione CEE ha vissuto profonde trasformazioni economiche, passando da economie pianificate centralmente a sistemi orientati al mercato. In questo panorama dinamico, l'integrazione dei Paesi CEE nelle GVC è emersa come un importante motore di crescita e sviluppo economico. La premessa centrale di questa ricerca è quella di svelare le molteplici connessioni tra la partecipazione alle GVC e le attività di innovazione nelle economie della CEE.
