Linguistic and stylistic correctness in legal translation: Creating a model for target text production for novice translators

Stylistic and linguistic correctness are two qualities required to deliver legal target texts properly translated. However, novice translation students, who have not yet developed the proper set of competencies and knowledge, not only struggle to respect the stylistic and linguistic conventions of a specific legal language but also to find the appropriate equivalents. At a theoretical level, scholars tend to focus more on source text analysis, leaving aside the importance of documentation and target text production in the translation process. This thesis aims to create a model that novice legal translation students can use to achieve stylistic and linguistic correctness in target text production, by taking into account the characteristics of the legal texts in a comparative viewpoint and guiding them in the documentation process. In doing so, the different tools that novice translators can use are taken into account. To support the model, concepts related to translation, specialised translation, and legal translation will be mentioned. Finally, the translation of a Judgement, carried out by resorting to the methodology outlined, will be analysed.
