The aim of this study is to offer an insight into the use of idioms in English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). Starting from an in-depth analysis of the features, criteria for identification, processes of acquisition and comprehension, difficulties in learning and use, relevance for proficiency of formulaic language and idioms, the study then moves on to the specific context of ELF and how idiomatic expressions are used by ELF speakers, exploring the frequency of idioms and the possible instances of creative variations in two corpora dedicated to spoken ELF: ELFA and VOICE.
