Captain James Cook, renowned explorer of the Royal Navy, describes in his logbook the itineraries, the places and the populations encountered during his second exploration of the Pacific Ocean (1772-1775). The diary was published in 1777 with the aim of making available in depth information useful to future explorers, geographers, but also to entertain common readers; it represents a precious resource for discovering cultures, sounds and musical expression far from European tradition. James Cook was not a music expert but he recognized the importance of various musical events, their function in the community life, and took advantage of these to create commercial relationships and friendships with the local population.

Il Capitano James Cook, celebre esploratore della Marina reale inglese, descrive nel suo diario di bordo l’itinerario, i luoghi e le popolazioni incontrate durante la sua seconda esplorazione dell’Oceano Pacifico (1772-1775). Il diario fu pubblicato nel 1777 con lo scopo di mettere a disposizione informazioni approfondite utili a futuri esploratori, geografi, ma anche per intrattenere comuni lettori; esso rappresenta una risorsa preziosa per scoprire culture, suoni ed espressioni musicali lontane dalla tradizione europea. James Cook non fu un esperto di musica ma riconosceva l’importanza dei vari eventi musicali, la loro funzione nella vita della comunità, e approfittava di questi per creare rapporti commerciali e d’amicizia con la popolazione locale.
