The Jewish Immigrant Experience and the Conflicts between Parents and Children: A Translation Proposal of "Children of Loneliness" and "America and I" from the short stories collection Children of Loneliness by Anzia Yezierska

This dissertation aims to give an insight on Jewish American literary production, and more specifically on the work of Azia Yezierska, a first-generation immigrant. The first chapter presents a general overview of Translation Studies, an academic discipline that deals with theoretical and practical aspects of translation, with a particular focus on the cultural shift that was initially suggested by Lefevere and Bassnett at the end of the 20th century. The second chapter introduces Jewish American literature by providing an outline of the historical context of migrations and an analysis of Anzia Yezierska’s short stories collections, where she presents the conflict between two generations of immigrants. Finally, the last chapter presents a translation proposal of "Children of Loneliness" and "America and I" from the short stories collection Children of Loneliness by Anzia Yezierska and a comment on the main challenges in the process of translation.
