ABSTRACT Introduction: The healthcare sector is a highly complex context and a variable and high-risk work environment; a type of interdependent work between professionals, teams and organizations is therefore necessary to coordinate safe patient care (Fukami, 2023). Psychological safety describes people's perceptions of the consequences of taking interpersonal risks in a particular context, such as the workplace (Edmondson, 2014). When workers feel safe, they can express concerns, ask questions, and seek/provide feedback without fear of repercussions. The factors/variables that can influence psychological safety are those relating to the organisation, the team and individual aspects. Objective This narrative review aims to describe the main updated knowledge relating to the topic of psychological safety, paying particular attention to organizational factors/variables. Therefore, the objectives of this review are: to know through the analysis of recent literature whether there are relationships between organizational variables/factors and psychological safety and, in the case of correlations, to evaluate their impact. Materials and methods Preliminary research was carried out to understand the characteristics of the interpersonal construct of psychological safety and what was produced. Subsequently, a search was carried out through the databases: PubMed, CINHAL, Google Scholar, SCOPUS and PsycInfo. The inclusion criteria concerned publications from the last 5 years; the population: health workers. Results The results obtained from the research in terms of relationships between the dependent variable (psychological safety) and independent variables (organizational variables) have demonstrated the validity of this construct; further investigations have highlighted some aspects not fully considered in previous research. Conclusions From the aspects emerging from this narrative review, the solidity of the construct of psychological safety is confirmed by recent studies, even if the relationships between variables denote a high complexity of the factors at play in a psychologically safe environment.
