Beyond Tradition: The Transformative Role of Online Matrimonial Forums in Pakistan

This research investigates the evolving landscape of matrimonial practices in Pakistan, focusing on the transition from traditional matchmaking to Online Matrimonial Forums (OMFs) such as Skip the Rishta Aunty (STRA) and Two Rings. Through a digital ethnography of STRA and Two Rings, the research explores screening criteria, surveillance, and the impact of OMFs on arranged marriages. It emphasizes the interplay between individual agency, cultural norms, religious influence, and changing gender dynamics. The study categorizes users into active and non-users, employing interviews to gain deeper insights into their experiences. The five-chapter structure covers the historical context, the birth and evolution of OMFs, their impact on matchmaking intermediaries, cultural aspects, and the changing dynamics of arranged marriages. The conclusion highlights the transformative potential of OMFs, challenging traditional norms and fostering inclusivity, and speculates on their continued evolution and integration within the dynamic sociocultural landscape of Pakistani marriages

Questa ricerca indaga il panorama in evoluzione delle pratiche matrimoniali in Pakistan, concentrandosi sulla transizione dal matchmaking tradizionale ai forum matrimoniali online (OMF) come Skip the Rishta Aunty (STRA) e Two Rings. Attraverso un’etnografia digitale della STRA e dei Due Anelli, la ricerca esplora i criteri di screening, la sorveglianza e l’impatto degli OMF sui matrimoni combinati. Sottolinea l’interazione tra l’azione individuale, le norme culturali, l’influenza religiosa e il cambiamento delle dinamiche di genere.
