Environmental protection is making sure that the earth and its inhabitants (which include humans, animals, and plants) are protected from activities that are detrimental to sustainable development. Sustainable development, on the other hand, means catering for the development needs of the present generation without jeopardizing those of the future. In urban planning, these two concepts are combined to produce an excellent model that will cater to both the present and future generations. This thesis argues that sustainable development with a focus on environmental protection in the Kanifing municipality, to cater for the needs of the rapidly growing population, should involve a well-planned structural development initiative in the area. This, as a result of migration from rural to urban areas in search of green pasture, led to many congested settlements in the municipality. According to the UN-HABITAT report on Kanifing Profiling( one of the municipalities in the Gambia), by 2030, there will be more people living in urban than rural areas in developing countries, and the Gambia is not an exception. Looking at the introduction of the circular economy, many cities nowadays are planned with a major consideration for protecting the environment. My thesis will make an in-depth analysis of how environmental protection measures in the municipality, particularly in Ebo Town( a community within the municipality that is highly affected by flooding), are implemented by the physical planning department to avoid congestion in structural development and encourage the implementation of sustainable structures with good drainage systems. It will further include or come up with new tools to protect the environment, with a focus on drainage and transportation systems. In the Gambia, urbanization has been an alarming issue because of the growing population in recent years. This has led to challenges in transportation systems and accommodation in the urban areas. The research will not only focus on environmental protection but also look into sustainable development focal points in the municipality. The national development plan will also be scrutinized for environmental protection and sustainability. This will give a conclusion about how effectively the environmental protection tools are implemented. Abstract
