First, the thesis intends to explore the background and scope of the contemporary immigration problem. By acknowledging the historical context and recognizing the distinctive characteristics of present-day immigration, the research seeks to establish a foundation for understanding the complexities inherent in this issue. Furthermore, the thesis acknowledges the political and policy challenges surrounding immigration. It recognizes the divisive nature of the issue and the competing interests and ideologies that shape public discourse and policy decisions. By examining these challenges, the research aims at informing policymakers and proposing evidence-based policy recommendations that strike a balance between humanitarian concerns, economic considerations, national security, and social cohesion. Overall, the purpose of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current immigration problem, its complexities, and its implications. By conducting a thorough analysis of the relevant literature, and a detailed analysis of some case studies, this thesis wants to provide an answer to the question on how immigration affects countries both from an economic and a political point of view
