The Emilia-Romagna region of Italy is highly susceptible to flooding, as evidenced by the series of destructive events in recent years (2014, 2017, 2019, and 2023). The devastating May 2023 floods, in particular, underscored the critical protective role of levees as well as the challenges in ensuring their effectiveness under extreme conditions. Using geographical information systems, and available data, the analysis of criticalities observed in levee performance during the May 2023 floods is conducted, and the use of indicators to showcase levee conditions are presented.

Abstract
The Emilia-Romagna region of Italy is highly susceptible to flooding, as evidenced by the series of destructive events in recent years (2014, 2017, 2019, and 2023). The devastating May 2023 floods, in particular, underscored the critical protective role of levees as well as the challenges in ensuring their effectiveness under extreme conditions. Using geographical information systems, and available data, the analysis of criticalities observed in levee performance during the May 2023 floods is conducted, and the use of indicators to showcase levee conditions are presented.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
